How do people celebrate Matariki?


Matariki is a maori new year.Maori in
New Zealand Celebrate Matariki.


Whanau gathering-This is a time when
extended whanau to celebrate the
beginning of the maori new year.


Preparing Matariki Breakfast- People
get up early in the morning before the
sun rises, To make a big feed for the
big whanau to celebrate the Matariki
during the night time to looking at the
stars.


Harvesting  crops-ripe crops in the field
and grow new crops in.


Fly kites-Maori special kind of kites that
are made out of flax or sticks.They also
have kite flying competition during the
new year.


Fishing-It is the time to catch fish, to
cook it and have a feast under the 7
Matariki stars.


Remembering Ancestors-Families
remember their ancestor who have died
they talk about the good time they have
had with them.


Narrating legends-Matariki legends to
the young.


Pepe rama-These are paper lanterns
that are flown in the sky at night time.

Maui and the sun

Long time ago there was three brothers one
named Maui.Maui was very smart but  the
Sun was moving to Fast and thing’s couldn't be done.so Maui said to his brother that he had a plan Maui said to go to make a strong rope out of  flax his brother weren't sure of Maui plan so they made the rope at night so that Maui and his brother don’t get seen by the sun after when they finish making the rope Maui said a karakia after that they when to the pithole where the sun is going to come up.
When Maui reached the pithole they build a
mudbrick so that they can hide themselves
then when the Sun came up maui told his
brothers to throw the rope then his brother
throw the rope and hold it.

Matariki

What is a Matariki?


Matariki is a Maori new year. It begins in late May or
early June when Matariki stars can be seen in the night
sky.These are a cluster of more than 300 stars but only
7 can be seen because they are the brightest.

The meaning of Matariki is tiny eyes or the eyes of God.
Matariki constellation is a very bright constellation of
stars that can be seen without a telescope.
